Lord Of The Rings Actor Ian McKellen Hospitalized After Stage Fall, But Might Recover Fast
Lord of The Rings actor Ian McKellen, aged 85 and known for his role as the mighty-yet-kinda-eccentric wizard Gandalf, recently fell off the front of a stage during a performance of Player Kings on 17 June. He plays John Falstaff in the play (via BBC News).
He was rushed to the hospital; the evening show at the Noel Coward theater in London was cancelled following that. This is so that McKellen “can rest”; he is expected to appear in a matinee performance on Wednesday 19 June.
How did he fall? Here’s the recap:
“Sir Ian seemed to trip as he moved downstage to take a more active part in the scene. He picked up momentum as he moved downstage which resulted in him falling off the stage directly in front of the audience. The house lights came up very quickly as the stage management and front of house team dealt with the incident. We were evacuated immediately so that Sir Ian could be treated in privacy.
An announcement was made by theatre management that the show had been cancelled, that Sir Ian was receiving treatment and an ambulance had been called. It was a shock to witness his fall and I wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts are also with his fellow cast members, stage crew and front of house team at the Noel Coward Theatre.”
As of this writing, McKellen is in “good spirits” and will “make a speedy and full recovery”.
McKellen’s career has spanned more than six decades, having played characters such as Magneto in the X-Men live-action films and the aforementioned Gandalf. On stage, he played Shakesperean characters like Macbeth and King Lear. Kakuchopurei would like to wish him a speedy recovery.
