Classic 2D Platformer Gimmick! Gets A Full-Fledged Sequel

Sunsoft, a game company known for its many NES retro gaming hits back in the 90s, is bringing back a classic 2D title this year.

The company, alongside developers Clear River Games and Bitwave Games, will be releasing a sequel to its cult classic platformer Gimmick! in 2024. The sequel, Gimmick! 2, will be out for PC, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

The first Gimmick! was a relatively unknown 2D platformer title that came out in the late NES console cycle 1992. It focuses on a green yokai named Yumetaro who has to go through a wonderland and rescue a little girl, collecting hidden objects of power and using his charged star attack to deal with enemies. The game is known for its unconventional attacks, mandatory secrets to uncover for the feel-good ending, and its replayability, since you won’t get to the good ending on your first playthrough.

For more on what makes Gimmick! a sought-after 2D platformer (and also a very expensive cartridge), check out this video playthrough from Frank Cifaldi, who is now the founding member of the Video Game History Foundation.

Here’s an overview of part 2:

Gimmick! 2 hails from developer Bitwave Games and is a follow-up to the beloved Nintendo Entertainment System platformer which remains a firm fan-favorite thanks to its tight platforming mechanics, loveable collection of characters and its ability to push the Nintendo Entertainment System to its technical limits.

Now, decades later, our hero of the hour Yokai Yumetaro leaps back into the spotlight, retaining the candy-colored presentation of the original game with a whole new graphical flourish that fans are certain to adore. A fresh platforming adventure filled with surprises puzzles, and treasures, Gimmick! 2 retains the challenging gameplay of the original game, but also offers an easier mode as an alternative for modern gamers wishing to enjoy the experience at a more forgiving pace.

Filled with a world of weirdly wonderful, adorable characters who tell their stories via silky slick animation, Gimmick! 2 will be a sequel well worth waiting for.
