Ubisoft Toronto Lays Off 33 Developers Amid Prince of Persia Remake Challenges
By Lewis Larcombe|July 1, 2024|0 Comment
In a recent development, Ubisoft Toronto has laid off 33 developers, a move linked to a strategic realignment aimed at meeting the studio’s ambitious goals. This news comes despite the studio’s positive reports on the progress of the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake.
A statement provided to PC Gamer explained the decision: “Ubisoft Toronto has decided to conduct a targeted realignment to ensure it can deliver on its ambitious roadmap. Unfortunately, this will impact the roles of 33 team members who will be leaving Ubisoft. We are committed to providing comprehensive support to them, including severance and career assistance, to help through this transition.”
Ubisoft Toronto, known for titles such as Far Cry 5, Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs Legion, and the forthcoming Splinter Cell remake, has faced significant challenges with the Prince of Persia remake. Initially announced in September 2020, the game had already been in development for two and a half years at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. It was originally scheduled for release in January 2021.
However, following a poor reception to the reveal trailer, the game has experienced multiple delays. In 2022, Ubisoft Montreal, the original creator of the 2003 Sands of Time, took over the project. During the Ubisoft Forward showcase in June, the company announced a new release target for 2026, though no specific platforms have been confirmed.
As the studio navigates these changes, it remains focused on delivering high-quality games while supporting its affected employees during this transition.
