Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Developer: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
Release Date: 20 October 2023

Super Mario Bros Wonder has captured the hearts of many Mario series fans and players worldwide. The controls feel like Mario Bros. 3, but even more refined, the art style is reminiscent of Yoshi’s Island, which also looked beautiful for a 90’s game, and the new enemies and designs look amazing. The powerups are mostly new. The bosses are fun to fight, although a little easy, and the difficulty progression feels right. The special world levels actually had a bit of challenge, giving players the extra edge in progression. The badges system is a great addition, where you can equip badges to gain exciting new abilities.

The aesthetic here is subtly different from previous Mario games, a little more approachable and a little more psychedelic; there are gorgeous little animation details everywhere. Super Mario Bros Wonder has no story to discover, no complex rules to learn; just instant, appealing fun. It’s fun you’ll have already experienced if you’re a Mario fan, but with enough novelty and unexpected twists to prevent it from feeling over-familiar.

One of its standout features was the return of main characters from past games, which added depth to the storyline. The game successfully reintroduced fan-favorite characters in a meaningful way, dispelling initial concerns that their return would be purely for fan service, even so that this RPG entry has sold over 1.6 million copies in the first three months of its released.
