Black Myth: Wukong Rides To 18 Million Sales With Expansion On The Horizon
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|September 6, 2024|0 Comment
Black Myth: Wukong, a highly anticipated Chinese action RPG, has skyrocketed to 18 million copies sold in just two weeks, marking one of the fastest-selling PC games ever. Investors, including Daniel Wu of Hero Games, are celebrating the game’s success, which is expected to reach 30 million sales over its lifetime, according to a recent Bloomberg interview.
Wu, the primary external investor in Wukong developer Game Science, took a significant risk by funding a large portion of the game’s six-year, US$70 million development. The gamble paid off, not only catapulting sales past industry giants like Elden Ring and Zelda but also helping to secure Hero Games’ stake in the future of Chinese game development.
As Wukong continues to break records, Game Science is already planning an expansion, offering an opportunity to boost sales further. Wu believes this move will mirror the impact of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which rekindled interest in the original game. The expansion is likely to offer players fresh content while further solidifying Wukong’s place in the gaming world.
For Wu, the success of Black Myth: Wukong is just the beginning of what could be a defining moment for Chinese game development on the global stage, and I share the same sentiment. For years, China has shown their talent in developing mobile games. So I think it’s about time they flex their prowess in developing games for platforms like PC and consoles.
