New 40-Player Smash Battle Royale Announced; Players to Decide the Game’s Fate in Upcoming Playtest
By Alisha Alix|September 12, 2024|0 Comment
Odyssey Interactive is back in action following the lukewarm reception of their sports-MOBA hybrid, Omega Strikers. The studio has officially announced its next project – a platform fighter hybrid called Byte Breakers, reminiscent of Super Smash Bros with battle royale a la Fortnite, promising an adrenaline-pumping experience with a 40-player setup.
In this exciting mashup, Byte Breakers will feature characters from Omega Strikers. Although still in the early stages of development, Odyssey Interactive is eager to gather feedback from the public during the game’s initial playtest scheduled for 13th September in North America. Players outside the region can show their interest by wishlisting the game to receive development updates.
Odyssey Interactive emphasized that the fate of Byte Breakers is uncertain. Depending on the playtest reception, the game may either evolve into a major platform fighter or be abandoned. Following the disappointment of Omega Strikers due to wrapping things for too long, the studio appears committed to experimenting with new concepts and “build an evolution of the Smash genre.”
Marketing Director Ryan K. Rigney tweeted on X, stating:
We’re making a 40 player platform fighter battle royale.
BUT we might not actually ship it. We’re playtesting in public to find out whether we should.
This isn’t rhetoric—we’re serious. If you love it, we double down. If not, we icebox it.
Details of the game are still sparse, but we do know that players will team up with a partner and try to be the last duo standing among a total of 40 players. The goal is to eliminate opponents, possibly by reducing their health to 0 or by knocking them into the void. The game’s maps will shrink as the glitch zone expands, pushing remaining players closer together until one team emerges victorious.
This approach is bold, and while the game is in its early stages, it already boasts impressive visuals, especially its animations. With such high-quality work already evident, this project might make or break once the playtest begins tomorrow via Steam.
