Joker Folie A Deux Ending Explained & Post-Credits Breakdown
By Alleef Ashaari|October 2, 2024|0 Comment
Joker Folie A Deux is now showing in Malaysian cinemas. In the meantime, check out our spoiler-free review of the movie here.
The synopsis reads:
“Joker: Folie À Deux” finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.
The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Catherine Keener (“Get Out,” “Capote”), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from “Joker.” Director Todd Phillips has co-written the script for the sequel and will return as director. Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck AKA the Joker and Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn.
The movie is essentially about the Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck AKA the Joker staying at Arkham Asylum while going to his trials in court. At Arkham Asylum, he meets Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn and they fall in love.
There’s really not much to talk about or explain. Throughout the movie, Arthur and Harley (he calls her ‘Lee’) fall in love. At the start of the movie, Arthur is back to being his depressive self but starts becoming more like the confident Joker as he falls in love with Harley.
The main defence in his criminal trial is that the Joker was a split personality and that Arthur Fleck was not responsible for his actions. However, at the end of the movie, he admits in court that there is no Joker and that he’s always just been Arthur Fleck all this time. This results in him losing the trial as the jury judges him guilty of all his crimes.
The climax of the movie happens when a bomb goes off while the jury is announcing their verdict. A couple of Joker fanatics were the ones who set the bomb off and tried to rescue Arthur, but Arthur escaped them because he didn’t want to be the Joker anymore.
He goes to meet Harley one last time, but Harley abandons him because all this time, she’s really only been in love with the fantasy of being romantically involved with the Joker. She was never in love with Arthur Fleck.
The movie ends with what will certainly be the movie’s most divisive and polarizing scene.
Arthur Fleck gets stabbed by another Arkham inmate. This Arkham inmate is a psychotic young man who has been noticeably obsessed with the Joker throughout the movie. However, he’s been quiet the whole movie and only suddenly appears to kill Arthur at the end of the movie by stabbing him multiple times.
After stabbing Arthur, this psychotic Arkham inmate uses his knife to cut slits at the sides of his mouth, similar to that of Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy (probably as an easter egg or reference). He does all this while laughing maniacally.
Of course, this stupid and dumb scene seems to imply one of two things:
Choose your pick, whichever you prefer. The young psychotic Arkham inmate is unnamed in the movie, so I’m not sure who the actor playing him is, but I will update this article if I ever find out.
There are NO Joker Folie A Deux post-credits scenes.
That’s a good thing, considering how bad this movie is, I’m not sure anyone would be looking forward to another pointless sequel.
