Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred: All Runes Tier List
By Ali'sha Harris|October 9, 2024|1 Comment
The latest expansion for Diablo 4, Vessel of Hatred, has introduced the exciting return of Runes since the days of Diablo 2.
These power-ups allow players to enhance their gear with various combinations of runes that evolve into powerful Runewords, granting additional abilities. Whether you aim to wield the Sorcerer’s Teleport as a Necromancer or bolster specific weaknesses in your build, the Runeword system offers remarkable versatility and potency.
Discover all there is to know about the Runes and Runewords in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred.
In Vessel of Hatred, these special socketable stones bring a whole new dimension to your gear. While a single Rune won’t do much, combining two of them creates a powerful Runeword that lets you borrow skills from other classes. It may seem a bit complex at first, but it’s actually quite straightforward.
There are two categories of Runes to consider:
These Runes typically generate Offerings based on an action you perform, such as drinking a potion or casting an ultimate skill. Rarer variants tend to have easier trigger conditions.
For example, with Invocation Runes, you can summon spirit wolves, boost critical chance, or even unleash skills from other classes. Stronger abilities consume more offerings and are often linked to rarer Invocation Runes.
To make these Runes work, you’ll need to slot both a Ritual Rune and an Invocation Rune onto a two-slotted piece of gear, like your legs, helmet, chest, or two-handed weapon. If you happen to provide more Offerings than required for an Invocation Rune, you’ll trigger an additional Overflow effect.
To unlock Runeword in Diablo 4, you need to progress through the Vessel of Hatred campaign until you receive the quest “Fundament of Faith.” Upon completing this quest, an NPC will grant you the access to use the Runeword system and provide you with an initial set of Runes to start experimenting with.
You can obtain Runes in the Vessel of Hatred from various sources:
Additionally, you can craft Runes at the Jeweler by using 3 of the same type to generate a random Rune of the same rarity. You can also find Tributes in the Undercity and through other activities, which increase the Rune rewards you receive for completing the activity. Best to remember that the Undercity is the best place to farm for Runes.
Creating and using Runeword is quite simple. To do this, you need to socket a Ritual Rune and an Invocation Rune into the same piece of gear. The Ritual Rune serves as your generator, while the Invocation Rune is your spender. If done correctly, an icon should appear above your skill bar displaying the created Runeword. The icon’s background will gradually fill up as you generate Offering.
Once it is full, the Runeword will automatically trigger and reset your Offering. Keep in mind that you must socket both runes onto a single piece of gear, so any gear you intend to form a runeword on will need at least two sockets.
If you wish to change them, you can simply unsocket the runes from your equipment in your inventory without needing to visit the Jeweler. We suggest placing your Runeword in your helmet, body armor, or pants, as these pieces only accommodate stat-boosting gems. Also, ensure that the offering on the Ritual Rune is equal to or greater than the offering on the Invocation Rune.
This tier list showcases the best and worst-ranked Runes, ranging from Ritual Runes to Invocation Runes. Keep in mind that only two Runewords may be active at a time.
These Runes are the easiest to gather Offering with for Invocation Runes.
