Selangor Red Giants Fall Short Of Perfect MPL Season

The Selangor Red Giants narrowly missed an unbeaten run in the Regular Season but are still the favourites for a back-to-back championship in the MLBB Professional League (MPL) Malaysia. With a strong performance throughout the season, they secured the top spot on the leaderboard with 24 points, heading into the Season 14 Playoffs as the number one seed. Hot on their heels, Team Vamos secured second place with 18 points, earning them a direct spot in the Upper Bracket Semi-Finals.

Another Record Broken For MPL Malaysia

Fans tuned in like never before this season. The Week 4 clash between Selangor Red Giants and Team Vamos set a new viewership record for the MPL Malaysia Regular Season, drawing 262,061 Peak Concurrent Viewers (PCV) as reported by Esports Charts. This surpassed the previous record of 236,759 PCV, set by Homebois and Team HAQ in Season 13.

According to Fikri Rizal Mahruddin, Marketing & Business Development Lead at MOONTON Games:

“MLBB esports has never been more popular in Malaysia – our viewership numbers clearly reflect that. However, we are still far from having unlocked our fullest potential. We are already the nation’s most popular esports league, but our ambition is to become the most popular form of sporting entertainment in Malaysia. We are not too far off from that.”

Viktor Proniakin, Product Manager at Esports Charts, highlighted the season’s success, noting a 12.5% increase in peak viewership compared to Season 13.

“The MPL Malaysia Season 14 Regular Season, which features top-tier teams from across Malaysia, has drawn even more attention this year. The stage has set new viewership milestones for the tournament, with a 12.5% increase in peak viewership compared to Season 13. Additionally, total hours watched grew by 20%, setting yet another record. This marks the highest numbers ever for the Regular Season stage in MPL Malaysia’s history, reflecting the growing popularity of MLBB esports in the region.

Notably, Selangor Red Giants, a strong contender in the league, also had their best viewership ever during this stage. This marks a big moment for the team, showing their strong connection with the local fanbase during this record-breaking 14th season.”

Week 6 Drama

The final week of the Regular Season was filled with surprises. Monster Vicious, an all-Malaysian squad, shocked everyone with a 2-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Selangor Red Giants, thanks to their Jungler, Muhammad Danish Fitri “Unii” Bin Razman, who also became the first player to use the new hero Suyou. His performance earned him MVP of the Match.

Team Vamos had their own challenge in Week 6, where RSG Malaysia managed to steal a point despite losing 1-2. Yet, Vamos’ Jungler Muhammad Nazhan “Chibi” Mohd Nor dominated the deciding game, carrying his team to victory within 10 minutes with hero Nolan, leaving the competition far behind.

Despite the blips, Team Vamos still secured second place in the standings, with rivals RED Esports and Monster Vicious failing to win their matches on Day 2. Monster Vicious’ inconsistency this season saw them defeat almost every top-six team except JP NINERS, while struggling against lower-ranked teams.

At the other end of the table, RSG MY’s brief resurgence was cut short by Homebois, relegating them to the MLBB Academy League. They will now compete in the Season 3 Challengers Conference, hoping for a quick return to MPL Malaysia. Meanwhile, Team HAQ will battle Young and Dangerous for a shot at joining MPL Malaysia Season 15.

Playoffs & M6 World Championship Beckon

The MPL Malaysia Season 14 Playoffs will be held in Johor Bahru for the first time, at the Educity Sports Complex from 31 October to 3 November. The top six teams will compete for the championship and a share of the US$100,000 prize pool, with the top two teams earning direct entry into the prestigious M6 World Championship, set to take place in Malaysia this year with a US$1 million prize pool.

Fans attending the Playoffs can also look forward to the Southern Festival, featuring family-friendly activities, live performances by local artists, and a food festival in collaboration with Foodelicious. Entry is free, making it an exciting event for both esports enthusiasts and the general public.
