Venom Gets A Malaysian Batik Makeover By Local Artist In Collab With Sony Pictures Malaysia

Sony Pictures Malaysia has announced an exciting collaboration with acclaimed local artist Arif Rafhan, who has unveiled a unique art series inspired by the iconic Marvel character Venom and Malaysia’s rich tradition of batik. This extraordinary fusion of pop culture and heritage celebrates the release of Venom The Last Dance, bringing a bold new look to the beloved anti-hero while showcasing Malaysia’s artistic roots.

The Venom x Batik Inspired Art Series reimagines the notorious symbiote Venom through intricate batik patterns, blending dark, edgy aesthetics with the elegance and vibrancy of Malaysia’s traditional textile art. Arif Rafhan’s interpretation breathes new life into Venom, merging the fluid forms of batik motifs with Venom’s iconic sharp, chaotic visuals.

Simon Foo, Managing Director of Sony Pictures Entertainment Malaysia said:

“We are incredibly proud to work with Arif Rafhan to bring this unique concept to life. This project is a great example of how we can blend global pop culture phenomena with local heritage, creating something truly special for Malaysian audiences.”

Arif Rafhan, known for his innovative use of Malaysian cultural elements in contemporary art, shared his thoughts on the project:

“Venom is such a fascinating character with a strong visual identity. By blending that with batik, which is deeply personal to me and to the Malaysian heritage, I wanted to create something that felt familiar yet refreshingly different. It’s a celebration of both worlds.”

This unique collaboration between Sony Pictures Malaysia and Arif Rafhan is a testament to the ongoing efforts to bridge global pop culture with local traditions, offering Malaysian audiences a special connection to the Venom universe. The Venom x Batik Inspired Art Series will be featured across various platforms, including digital content, and a special in cinema content only at GSC locations during the release of Venom The Last Dance.

In Venom The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.

Venom: The Last Dance stars Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu and Alanna Ubach. The film is directed by Kelly Marcel from a screenplay she wrote, based on a story by Hardy and Marcel. The film is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, Kelly Marcel, Tom Hardy and Hutch Parker.

Venom The Last Dance premieres in Malaysian cinemas on 24 October 2024. In the meantime, check out my breakdown of Knull in the final trailer by heading over here.
