Ubisoft Disbands Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team

In a recent announcement that has stirred concern among fans, Ubisoft has confirmed that the majority of the Ubisoft Montpellier team, responsible for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, has been transitioned to new projects. This shift is intended to harness their specialized skills for future projects.
Senior producer of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Abdelhal Elguess has shared that The Lost Crown is reaching the conclusion of its post-launch support, which included three free content updates and a DLC released in September. “We’re now focused on making the game accessible to a wider audience,” Elguess explained. “It recently debuted on Steam, and we’re thrilled to announce that a Mac version will arrive this winter.”
While this news is positive on one front, it also marks the end of an era for the core team behind The Lost Crown. Elguess revealed, “Most of the team members have moved on to projects where their expertise can shine. We know players have a love for this brand and Ubisoft is excited to bring more Prince of Persia experiences in the future.”
However, fans may be more disappointed to learn from reputable French journalist Gautoz, in his latest video, that Ubisoft has seemingly abandoned plans for the Metroidvania game months after its January release. Despite glowing reviews, it reportedly failed to meet sales expectations.
Gautoz also shares that The Lost Crown team proposed a follow-up sequel, only to see it denied by Ubisoft, with concerns growing that it might cannibalize the first game’s long-term sales. Following that, the team sought to create two expansions for The Lost Crown. While one found approval and has since been released, The Mask of Darkness DLC, the other was dismissed in favour of pursuing new projects.
Earlier this year, Insider Gaming reported that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown sold approximately 300,000 copies in its first two weeks, signaling challenges in its commercial journey.
This turn of events is undoubtedly disheartening for loyal fans craving more adventures in the cherished Prince of Persia universe. As the future of the franchise remains uncertain, all eyes will be on Ubisoft to see how they plan to carry the legacy of Prince of Persia forward.
