Rockstar Breathes New Life Into GTA Trilogy With Major Visual Upgrade
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|November 13, 2024|0 Comment
Three years after the rocky launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, Rockstar Games has rolled out a notable update for the current-gen console and PC versions, marking a major visual and performance overhaul. This edition, originally released in 2021 and bundling fan-favourite titles GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, faced harsh criticism at launch for underwhelming graphics and numerous technical issues.
The surprise update introduces the “classic lighting mode” from last year’s mobile version, adding a nostalgic touch that greatly enhances the trilogy’s overall visuals. Yet, players have noticed Rockstar didn’t mention all the upgrades in its patch notes. X user Besk reported several enhancements, including refined fire, rain, and fog effects, improved animations, glass-breaking visuals, and richer bloom and lighting effects.

GTA DE New Patch has FINALLY fixed the aiming running animations across all guns in GTA 3 and VC DE which used to be extremely broken. This is by far the best fix for me.

Players can also look forward to smoother gameplay mechanics—like running while aiming certain weapons, skipping cutscenes, and the addition of date/time stamps on saves. Other upgrades enhance map accuracy and display the player’s precise position, adding to the polished experience.
Originally, the trilogy was plagued with technical hiccups, from glitches to the accidental inclusion of unlicensed music and developer notes within the game files, even leading to the PC version’s temporary removal. Despite this, sales figures revealed that the trilogy had reached 10 million copies shortly after its release. While Take-Two hasn’t shared exact numbers, CEO Strauss Zelnick indicated that the collection has performed “great” overall, highlighting its continued popularity despite early setbacks.
