Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Guide: Best Classes & Vocations To Start With

Developed by Square Enix, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. In the meantime, check out our full review of the game by heading over here.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is a reimagining and remake of the classic and legendary JRPG. Unlike in other JRPGs, with the exception of the protagonist, you’ll actually have to create your own characters and party members. This includes their classes (called vocations in the game) and appearances.
There are nine classes or vocations to choose from, and that may seem like an impossible choice at the beginning because you can only start with three (four members in a full party, including the hero).
So, the biggest question is, what classes or vocation should you start with?
One of the most important jobs in any JRPG, arguably the most essential, is the healer. The job of the healer in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake falls on the Priest class and vocation since they’re the only ones who can learn major healing spells and abilities such as Multi-Heal (besides the hero and the Monster Wrangler, though the latter’s healing spells are weak).
Trust me, even at normal difficulty (Dragon Quest), you’ll definitely need a healer at all times for how much damage enemies can deal and for that, you’ll need a Priest.
The Monster Wrangler class is a brand new class introduced exclusively in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. I recommend having at least one Monster Wrangler in your party because they are essential to making the most of the new Monster Arena and monster-collecting mechanics. You can’t collect or recruit certain monsters without having a Monster Wrangler in your party, so to save time and make it easier, it’s always best to have one in your party at all times. Plus, they’re a pretty versatile class, so they can both heal and deal damage.
If you don’t have a Monster Wrangler in your party, you’ll miss out on the game’s unique mechanics.
Last but not least, the third and last class you should start with is a Mage. While the combat in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake isn’t as weakness-oriented as in other JRPGs like Atlus’ Persona games, many enemies in the game still have hidden elemental weaknesses. This makes a Mage a huge damage dealer, especially when it comes to powerful offensive elemental spells that can destroy groups of enemies at a time.
Despite being a glass cannon, Mages can often deal the most damage out of any class (except for the hero or warrior) when used properly.
Two other classes that you can also start with are Thief or Warrior.
If you have a Thief in your party, they can learn the Nose For Treasure early on. This ability doesn’t cost any MP, and you can use it at any time outside of battle in dungeons to find out exactly how many undiscovered treasure chests are left.
Meanwhile, a Warrior is the heaviest physical attacker out of the classes, so if you’re looking for pure offensive physical damage, the Warrior is the best class for that,
