Xbox Exclusives? Not So Exclusive Anymore

The era of Xbox exclusives may be on its last legs—if recent claims hold water.

Windows Central’s Jez Corden stirred the pot over the weekend, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share his perspective on Microsoft’s evolving first-party strategy. His bold assertion?

“Xbox won’t have exclusives going forward. Everything is timed exclusive at most.”

According to Corden, Microsoft is leaning into a “case by case” approach, where exclusives are more of a happy accident than a hard rule. Most Xbox games will reportedly be multiplatform, with only a few exceptions. He even speculated that big-budget titles like the upcoming Fable reboot could eventually make their way to PlayStation—just not necessarily on day one.

This isn’t exactly a surprise. Earlier this year, Microsoft began rolling out Xbox games to other platforms, with titles like Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded making the jump to PlayStation and even Nintendo Switch. More recently, Doom: The Dark Ages was announced for PS5 alongside its Xbox and PC versions, while a PlayStation port of the upcoming Indiana Jones game is confirmed for 2025.

Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s gaming boss, has doubled down on this open-door policy, stating last month that they’re not closing off the possibility of first-party titles showing up on rival platforms. Matt Booty, the president of Microsoft Studios, echoed this sentiment, explaining to Variety that exclusivity decisions are now a mix of production schedules and strategy.

“We want to make sure there’s a great experience for our Xbox players, and then the gap between [when it becomes available on PlayStation] is as much a production decision as it is anything else”

It seems Xbox’s new mantra is: Why keep all the fun to yourself when you can share the love (and profits) with everyone else? The days of platform exclusivity wars might not be over, but Microsoft is clearly playing a different game now.
