Sonic Voice Actor Leaves Role After 10 Years
By Alleef Ashaari|January 29, 2021|0 Comment
Roger Craig Smith, the voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog for the past decade since 2010, has officially left the role.
It all began when Smith posted a tweet that implied he was leaving Sonic, with an image of a Sonic-blue broken heart emoji attached. He wrote:
“Welp, 10 years was an amazing run. Onward to new zones! Much love to the fans who’ve been so kind. It’s been an honor.”
Earlier today, the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account officially confirmed the news. They wrote:
“For over 10 years, Roger Craig Smith has been an integral part of the SEGA family,” Sega wrote. “He brought the voice of Sonic to life, and we are forever grateful for his never-ending enthusiasm in helping the community and spreading joy.”

Thank you, Roger, for all you've done for Sonic.

However, no official reason was given or provided for Smith’s departure from the iconic role. It’s curious that this is happening in 2021, which is the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise’s 30th anniversary. Perhaps Sega wants to mark the milestone with a brand new voice actor to kickstart a new generation of Sonic games? It’s possible.
Besides being the voice of Sonic for the last 10 years, Roger Craig Smith is also best known for voicing Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil franchise, Kyle Crane in Dying Light, and many other roles in games, anime, TV series, and movies.
In the meantime, check out our review of 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie.
