Malaysia’s First Asia Comic Con Opens to ACG Fans
What does one do when there is an event that sports the name Comic Con in it? Well, that’s easy – it’s a must to pack it up with loads and loads of expectations. That, from the get-go, is the pitfall this all-new event invites on itself when it calls itself Asia Comic Con. First started in Thailand to much fanfare, the founders believe moving to Malaysia for a new leg may do it some good. Going by what the press tour – the one and only session for the morning – it’s a big bag of hits and some misses.
Before going into the hits, let’s check out the timetable for the weekend – yes, Asia Comic Con 2018 Malaysia is open now and will run for tomorrow and Sunday:
Highlights for this event are confined to three or four zones: the figurine and toy display area; 1/1 scale statues of Batman Ninja, Predator, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy; the Dragon Quest Museum; and eSports section that will feature mini on-site tournaments.
Don’t take the words of yours truly – come on by Asia Comic Con 2018 Malaysia at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. There will also be an intimate Aninsong Concert, featuring NoB and mao, both renowned for their respective efforts in the anime music space. There are cosplay idols too, though they aren’t exactly new to the Malaysia anime, games, and comics scene. Are there comic artists guests? Not really – and this is awkward as there are no big comic celebrities, local or otherwisem gracing this event. Of course, this error is occurring across the board for all anime, comics, and games conventions in Malaysia.
Will Asia Comic Con 2018 Malaysia make it big? Bigger than some of the established events? Perhaps, perhaps not – what’s certain is how such events are stagnating with no new content. So here’s to hoping that there will be other new elements coming into play that will truly evolve the anime, games, and comics scene.
