I’m Not Feeling The New Devil May Cry 5 Gameplay Footage; Find Out Why

Update: Added the game’s release date.

After hearing that addictive battle theme for Nero and seeing a stunner of an Xbox E3 showing, I should be excited for the upcoming Devil May Cry 5. Lo and behold, Gamescom has presented us with new gameplay footage of the game (via IGN), and…

….

Huh.

…….

……….

…………I don’t know what to feel.

To be fair, the new art style might take getting used to, especially after seeing Hideki Kamiya growing out of Capcom and doing hyper action games under the PlatinumGames banner. There are some puzzles, which is nice and can mix things up from the usual hack-and-slash fare.

And I’m sure it controls like a breeze, what with the way Nero moves around, air-dashes around, and fisting every demon in the fray. Nope, I can’t use the word “fisting” without any sexual connotation whatsoever.

It’s just that most of the movement and action bits look and feel kinda slow. Like it’s less a “hyper” action game and more like “medium paced” one. It’s fine if it’s any other action game, but last I checked, Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 3 were frenetic and fast as hell.

Even the Ninja Theory reboot is faster than this. There, I said it; come at me, fanboys.

Maybe the good stuff is saved for Tokyo Game Show 2018. Maybe it’ll get better when it’s close to its 2019 release window. Maybe it needs a better demo that showcases the better aspects of a Devil May Cry game. It’s only one stage and a boss; us connoisseurs should wait until the full game to pass full judgment.

But for now, this isn’t creating a great impression for a guy who craves balls-to-the-walls action gaming goodness. Like the series’ creator’s other fares.

Devil May Cry 5 is coming out 8th March 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
