Four Console Esports Games Entered Twitch’s Top Ten Games Last Month

The most popular (most-watched) esports games on Twitch have always been dominated by PC games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. However, things have begun to change. In December 2018, statistics show that four console esports games have managed to break into Twitch’s top ten.

These games include FIFA 19 at number 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at number 6, Street Fighter V at number 7, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate at number 8. Other than Street Fighter V, these are all first-timers in Twitch’s top ten ranking. Overall, these four games accumulated a whopping 7.2 million hours of live Twitch viewership last month alone.

While there are technically PC versions of FIFA 19, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Street Fighter V, they are primarily and dominantly played on consoles. These games’ viewership numbers were bolstered thanks to several major tournaments being held in December 2018, including the likes of Street Fighter V‘s Capcom Cup 2018, PGL FIFA 19 Cup Bucharest and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4‘s CWL Las Vegas.

Still, the most surprising addition must be Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which is not only a Nintendo Switch exclusive but also only recently released in December 2018. The fact that it managed to break into Twitch’s top ten games is a remarkable feat and just goes to show how passionate (and dedicated) the game’s player base is.

Meanwhile, only two of these four games managed to enter YouTube’s top ten games, in comparison. YouTube Gaming remains dominated by PC games and even a mobile game, Clash Royale. However, it should be noted that the total number of hours watched on YouTube Gaming is considerably lower than that on Twitch.

Here are the statistics, as provided by Newzoo:
