[Report] Nintendo Will Release Two New Switch Models

Late last year, we reported on the rumour that a new generation of Nintendo Switch would be coming out in 2019, and now it looks like it might be true after all. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Nintendo is currently working on not one, but two new models of their hybrid console.

The first of the two new reported Nintendo Switch variants is described as having “enhanced features targeted at avid videogamers, although it won’t be as powerful as Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 Pro or Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One X.”

This sounds like it would be a significantly more powerful Switch, with possible advantages like increased framerate and higher resolutions. However, it probably won’t be much of a massive generational or technological leap, considering the original Nintendo Switch is barely two years old as of 2019.

The second of the two new reported Nintendo Switch variants is described as “a cheaper option for casual gamers that Nintendo sees as a successor to its aging hand-held 3DS device.”

What this means is that Nintendo will probably be removing several more “luxurious” features on the console to cut costs, similar to how the Nintendo 2DS was a variant of the Nintendo 3DS sans 3D capabilities.

The WSJ further reports that both new models of the Nintendo Switch will likely be announced at the upcoming E3 2019, and quite possibly released a few months later during Christmas (or the holiday season).

If the report turns out to be true, Nintendo will be stealing the limelight from both Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox this year (that is, if both of those companies don’t announce their own new consoles, which isn’t likely to happen).

What’s Next For The Big N?

Sales of the original Nintendo Switch console will probably be negatively affected if Nintendo confirms the report too early. However, it would also bolster and extend the momentum set by the Switch, as well as bring in more gamers, especially those who have been skeptical of the original and undecided on whether to purchase a Switch.

What do you think of the report (especially those who already owns a Nintendo Switch)? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook.
