Destiny 2 Is Going Free-To-Play, Heading To Steam, & Getting Cross-Saves

We mentioned the new Destiny 2 Shadowkeep expansion during our Google Stadia coverage, but that’s just the tip of the loot-and-shoot iceberg. Turns out Bungie has more updates in store for us.

Ever since their breakup with Activision, Bungie is going to town in making its fanbase happy and giving them what they want. Here’s what they talked about during their recent stream:

  • Shadowkeep will bring players back to the Moon to explore an alien citadel. This stage will be twice as large as the Destiny 1 version. It’ll be out Fall 2019.
  • Destiny 2 will now be on Steam (instead of Battle.net) and introduce a free-to-play model where the base game will be free. You’ll only be paying for the game’s expansions; the Year One content is free of charge as well.
  • When will the Steam jump happen? When Shadowkeep is out.
  • How much will you be paying for Shadowkeep? US$35. You can also get everything from the base game, the Year One updates, the annual pass, and the extra expansion Forsaken for US$40 instead, Shadowkeep included. If you prefer buying it ala carte, you can do that too. Your choice, really.
  • The PC version of Destiny 2 will also have cross-saves for Xbox, Google Stadia, and PS4. Guess the latter publisher are finally game with sharing.
  • The new Raid will be set in the Black Garden, which fans remember as the last few stages of the first Destiny. You know, the one full of the Vex.
  • Armour 2.0 is going to double-down on the stats. It appears as though players’ gear will now incorporate more mod slots and you’ll be able to slot in multiple types to create much more bespoke build. Bungie talked about how in the past it had shied away from the MMORPG label, but was now doubling down on depth and detail.
  • There’s now a better emphasis on PvP.
  • There will be no more console exclusive content for Destiny 2. Everything from weapons to maps will be available across all platforms.

Check out the video documentary below for more information. Suffice to say, the old Bungie is back and better than ever!
