Pros React To Overwatch League’s 2-2-2 Role Lock

Overwatch esports are known for their fast-paced and flashy matches but it hasn’t been that way for several months now. The current meta forced Overwatch League pros into relying on the GOATS playstyle (comprising of three tank heroes and three support heroes), a slow and overly-meticulous gameplay strategy that makes for less-exciting matches.

Thanks to Overwatch League fan complaints, Blizzard might finally be returning the game’s meta back to an older but more popular format: 2-2-2 (comprising of two tanks, two supports, and two damage-dealers). While this has yet to be confirmed by the company, some pros (like former pro Chan-hyung “Fissure” Baek) have attested to its truth.

In a recent video, New York Excelsior’s Jong-ryeol “Saebyeolbe” Park, had this to say about GOATS and how it has affected his performance as a pro player in the past few months or so.

“I’ve been benched as a substitute for a long time, and there were times that were really hard for me.

It felt like GOATS wasn’t going to end.

My best hero is Tracer, and when I couldn’t play her anymore, I felt empty inside.

It hit me hard. When things got really tough on me, I did think about quitting.

It felt like everybody except me was making strides. The skill gap continued to get wider, that’s just the reality.

At the end of the video, Park revealed that he’s been practicing with the damage-dealer hero Sombra now. The character is now gaining popularity amongst pros and will hopefully bring a spark to Overwatch League matches once again.

In the meantime, check out New York Excelsior’s Jong-ryeol “Saebyeolbe” Park in the video below.
