SDCC 2019: Two Superman Animated Movies Coming In 2020
By Alleef Ashaari|July 20, 2019|0 Comment
DC Comics has announced their animated movie slate for 2020, and for the first time ever, they will be releasing two Superman movies in the same year, along with a Justice League Dark movie to boot. It’s a nice change of pace after years of too many Batman-related animated contents.
During the Batman: Hush animated movie premiere panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the company announced that Superman: Red Son will be the first animated movie to be released in 2020.
The original Elseworlds story Mark Millar, Dave Johnson and Killian Plunkett (on which the Superman: Red Son is based on), is one of the most iconic alternate-world stories starring the Man Of Steel. The premise is essentially what would happen if Kal-El landed in the Soviet Union Russia and becomes a symbol of Communism.
While this will be the first full-fledged adaptation of Superman: Red Son, CW’s Supergirl Season 4 did feature a loose take on the story by including a clone of Kara Zor-El who was then raised in a Communist Kaznia.
Spring 2019 will see the release of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, which is a sequel to the underrated but excellent 2017 animated movie Justice League Dark. Instead of the main Justice League team, it assembles several of DC’s most prominent magical heroes like John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and more.
Last but not least, the last DC animated movie in 2020 will be Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which will be an original story and not based on any existing comic book. It will feature a younger Superman at an early point of his superhero career, but besides that, details are scarce.
Besides these three animated movies, DC Comics will also be releasing several animated “DC Showcase†shorts, which will be included with the movies as bonus content. These shorts will feature Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death, The Phantom Stranger and an adaptation of Batman: Death in the Family.
Despite Warner Bros being absent from SDCC 2019, it’s good to get some DC Comics-related news coming out of the event, which is already being too dominated by the likes of Marvel.
