Tencent Now Practically Owns Mutant Year Zero Publisher
By Alleef Ashaari|September 30, 2019|0 Comment
Tencent already owns, partially owns or owns large shares of major video game developers and publishers, including the likes of League Of Legends dev Riot Games, Epic Games, Clash Of Clans dev Supercell, and Path Of Exile dev Grinding Gear Games.
Now the Chinese megacorporation can add Norwegian publisher and developer Funcom to that fast-growing list (via PCGamer), as they have purchased a lion’s share of the company (approximately 29 percent), which was previously owned by Norwegian firm KGJ Capital AS.
Funcom is best known for games like 2006’s Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, 2012’s The Secret World MMORPG, and several Conan-related games including 2018’s Conan: Exiles. However, their most recent and arguably biggest (published) game was 2018’s XCOM-like Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden by The Bearded Ladies.
They are now busy working on the next expansion for Conan: Exiles and a series of Dune games meant to tie into 2020’s Dune reboot by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve. Hopefully, Tencent’s purchase of large shares in Funcom will lead to more long-term resources for the Norwegian publisher/developer.
Tencent seems dead set on becoming the Disney of the games industry, with its hooks already sinking into even several of the biggest game developers/publishers like Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and Paradox Interactive, albeit only a 5 percent share in each respectively.
Check out Funcom’s latest effort, a new upcoming update for Conan Exiles.
