Sonic’s Next New Adventure Is In Space For A Jupiter Expedition

Sega’s blue hedgehog will be represented in a good light after his previous deformed image in a recent movie trailer.

The JUICE Explorer (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) will be using Sonic’s face and cute body as a logo on some of its equipment as part of the upcoming European Space Agency mission to monitor Jupiter’s moons in 2022. The news was made public by Sega and Japan’s Tohoku University; the former gave them permission to use the character.

Why Sonic? Apparently, the European team of the expedition, led by one Prof. Jan-Erik Wahlund, were fans of the Sonic The Hedgehog video games. Wahlund proposed the idea to Sega, stating his team’s fondness for the blue streak and also his adventures in space many times like the last boss fight in Sonic 2 and the entire last levels of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Remember that bulls*** final fight after getting all the Chaos Emeralds? Of course I did; it was insanely hard but oh-so-satisfying to complete…

The logo itself features classic Sonic alongside the slogan “If it’s electrified and wiggles, it’s ours!”. That quote was picked because the equipment used will examine and confirm the water bodies lying underneath the icy exteriors of Jovian moons Callisto and Ganymede via radio wave activity. The expedition crew will reach the system in 2029 if the launch in 2022 goes off without a hitch.
