Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order To Feature Sekiro-Like Parrying Mechanic & Difficulty Options

Respawn Entertainment has recently unveiled new gameplay footage by giving a final preview to several selected publications. We already know that the upcoming game will be featuring non-linear Metroidvania and Dark Souls-like gameplay, instead of the linear gameplay that was showcased at E3 2019.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order director Stig Asmussen revealed several more details about the highly-anticipated game. There will be difficulty options, including an easier story mode option and harder modes. He said:

“And probably the biggest change that we’ve made is difficulty in the game.

Most of us at work like a challenge, but we recognise this is Star Wars, [which has] a huge audience, we don’t want anybody to feel left out.”

According to Asmussen, the main theme of Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order will be “what it means to be a Jedi in dark times” and a lot of family-related themes as well. Cal and his crew will question the differences between what’s right and what’s wrong, but also the grey path in between as they realise that not everything is black and white in the fight against the Empire.

Asmussen also reassured players of the game’s non-linear gameplay:

“There’s a lot more choice for the player, and it’s about re-traversal, it’s about discovering new powers and finding new areas, but also going back to places you’ve been before, and discovering new areas within there as well.”

From the looks of the extended gameplay, the parrying mechanic seems to have been inspired by Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order will feature a block meter, where players can find windows of opportunity to take out enemies in one hit. Enemies can also counter your attacks and do the same thing, which is pretty similar to how combat works in Sekiro.
