While the iconic game franchise that made Hideo Kojima a household name and gave him a status as a god-like figure in the games industry initially with 1987’s Metal Gear for the MSX2, it was the 1998 PS1 exclusive Metal Gear Solid that solidified all that. This was the game that popularized not only the stealth genre in games but also long-ass in-engine cinematic cutscenes.

It started a trend of high production value in video games, sparking other games to follow suit with their own cinematic cutscenes, though it would be quite a few generations before in-engine cinematic cutscenes actually became a norm, instead of the widespread use of pre-rendered cutscenes that became prevalent.
