Kingdom Hearts Gets Yet Another Mobile Game With Project Xehanort

What’s with mobile games and Kingdom Hearts? Well, we’re getting yet another one with Project Xehanort. It is slated to release sometime in 2020 for Android and iOS devices with in-app purchases. There’s even already a tagline attached to the game, which explains its premise in one simple sentence:

“Why did he become the seeker of darkness?”

That’s right, the Kingdom Hearts Project Xehanort mobile game spinoff will likely be exploring the origin of the main antagonist of the Dark Seeker Saga (which ended with 2019’s Kingdom Hearts 3); Master Xehanort himself.

Those who played Kingdom Hearts 3 will have already seen glimpses of Xehanort as a young teen in flashbacks featured in the game, where he can be seen playing a Kingdom Hearts version of chess against a younger Master Eraqus (the master of Ventus, Terra and Aqua).

Project Xehanort isn’t even the game’s official title. In fact, Square Enix is currently holding the Guess the Name Twitter Campaign, where anyone who correctly guesses the real title will win prizes.

Project Xehanort will actually be the third mobile game to spawn from the Kingdom Hearts franchise after 2008’s Kingdom Hearts: Coded (or its expanded version 2010’s Re:coded) and 2017’s Kingdom Hearts: Union X (which originally released as Unchained χ in 2015.

In the meantime, check out my review of Kingdom Hearts 3 here or check out my detailed discussion of the franchise’s past, present, and future here (spoilers ahead).
