The Top 7 Studio Ghibli Films To Watch On Netflix
For weebs living in the licensing and region-locked void that is Southeast Asia, Netflix has been one of our greatest allies in legitimate access to anime content.
While US audiences are being spoiled for choice with streaming titans creating platform-exclusive content, Netflix stuck to its guns to license older shows that have been difficult to purchase, let alone rent or stream legally.
Soon, we will have access to Ghibli films, a genre unto itself at this point. However, with 21(!) titles in the pipeline, it can get a bit overwhelming. If you’re here reading KKP, you are likely the kind of person who has seen at least one Ghibli movie, if you’re not an avid anime fan.
Perhaps you might want to take this opportunity to introduce a normie friend, a spouse, or a Tinder date to the wonderful, magical world of anime. After all, Ghibli films have been a gateway for mainstream audiences to experience all the things that make anime such an awesome story-telling medium.Â
On that note, here’s a list of 7 Ghibli films to catch on Netflix. We will start with something easy to digest, for newcomers young and old.
As we move down the list, we’re going neck-deep for some of the more intense, immersive and contemplative experiences on the menu.
This timeless classic features the iconic Totoro, a giant fluffy forest spirit that has become Ghibli’s answer to Mickey Mouse. It’s a gentle story of adventure, mystery and innocent, childlike wonder. Easy on the eyes, and easier to digest.
The kind you wanna enjoy with a jar of cookies and hot chocolate. Warning: your kids will demand a giant Totoro plushie after watching.
