Overwatch Unveils New Hero Echo & Its Origin Story

I didn’t expect Blizzard to dump a new Overwatch origin trailer at the same time as the PS5 presentation, but here we are. The latest video highlights the 32nd Overwatch hero whose name is Echo, a robot created by Dr. Mina Liao, who happens to have had a hand in creating the omnics.

“Introducing Echo. An evolutionary robot programmed with a rapidly adapting artificial intelligence, Echo represents the cutting edge of technology,” reads the video description.

Echo was previously teased yesterday. A fictional log showed that she had created the prototype of something called Athena and that she believed that omnics had souls like humans.

It’s possible that Athena is the project codename for what would turn out to be Echo. Echo describes themselves in the trailer to be the legacy of Liao, who seems to have been killed off in an attack. The way the trailer segues from Liao’s internal monologue to that of Echo’s also suggests that the robot has some of her creator’s personality.

Outside of tabletop games, I’ve never felt interested in a PvP game’s lore so whatever revelations the video contains feel inconsequential to me, frankly. It was still fairly interesting to watch, but I’m more interested in seeing how Echo plays.

Blizzard says that they’re “coming soon”, so I guess it won’t be long before a gameplay preview (and fan art) comes along.
