PS5 Controller May Get A Smartphone-Like Upgrade
By Alleef Ashaari|March 2, 2020|0 Comment
Sony has revealed a lot of info about the PS5, but we still don’t know the most important bits. Like the price of the next-gen console, and the detailed specs of the PS5 controller or Dualshock 5 (which is actually not the official name as of yet).
Leaked patents have previously indicated that the PS5 controller could feature biofeedback capability and the removal of the light bar (which was originally introduced with the PS4’s Dualshock 4).
Now, another leaked patent is pointing to another major addition to the PS5 Dualshock 5 controller and a feature that’s already implemented in the latest flagship smartphones for the past few years;
Wireless charging.
According to the recently-granted patent (via Segment Next), a wireless charging adapter with housing can be attached to a DualShock 4 or 5 controller. While the Dualshock 5 sounds like it won’t support wireless charging on its own as it still requires this adapter, the patent suggests that the accessory can stay on and activate during gameplay.
This will apparently be made possible thanks to button duplicates so that players can continue using the controller while it’s charging using the adapter. The patent reads:
“A wireless charging adapter that can snap onto a computer game controller can be inductively coupled to a charging base to wirelessly recharge a battery in the controller.
The adapter also can include keys that mirror keys on the controller so that a gamer can remove the adapter with controller from the charging base, keep the adapter on the controller, and use both the controller keys and adapter keys to control a computer game.”
In addition, the patent also shows that the charging base can be configured to hold (and charge) multiple DualShock controllers at once.
If true, this will literally be a game-changer for the PS5. Previously, the Dualshock 4 already had a big advantage compared to the Xbox One controller, as the latter still relied on AA batteries.
However, take all this with a grain of salt, as none of this has been confirmed by Sony. The only confirmed details about the PS5 controller so far is that it will feature haptic technology, adaptive triggers, a USB-C port, and a larger battery than the Dualshock 4.
In the meantime, head on over here to check out all our other PS5-related news and feature articles.
