The Last Of Us TV Series In The Works At HBO

HBO has announced that they will be adapting a The Last Of Us TV series, which will be helmed by Naughty Dog vice president and the writer/creative director of both The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us Part II, Neil Druckmann, and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

In addition, HBO’s Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce The Last Of Us TV series along with Naughty Dog president Evan Wells. As a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, it will be the first TV series from PlayStation Productions.

Mazin said (via The Hollywood Reporter):

“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus.

Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”

The official HBO Twitter account tweeted a clip of the symbol of the Fireflies (see above), a brutal militia from 2013’s The Last of Us, stating that the TV series is “coming soon.”

Druckmann said:

“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us.

With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece.

I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

The Last Of Us HBO TV series will cover the events of the original 2013 game, but there will also be a possibility of including additional content from the upcoming sequel, The Last Of Us Part II, which is slated to release on 29 May 2020.

2013’s The Last of Us has sold more than 17 million copies across both its original release on the PS3 and a remastered version on PS4 to date. It’s one of the most iconic PlayStation exclusives of all time, which is no surprise why they decided to make an adaptation of it.

At the time of writing, HBO has yet to announce the casting for The Last Of Us TV series. From the looks of it, Game Of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau could portray a convincing and gruff Joel, while Kaitlyn Dever of Netflix’s Unbelievable fame might be a good choice for Ellie.

I know that fans used to say that Ellie looked like Ellen Page back then, but she’s probably too old to play the role now. Check out the fan-made image below, and think of the possibilities (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on the left, Kaitlyn Dever on the right).
