Animal Crossing: New Horizons Breaks Sales Record
By Melvyn Tan|April 23, 2020|0 Comment
I don’t own a Switch, but it’s easy to see how the latest Animal Crossing game has taken over the world based on all the memes and social media posts. So it’s also no surprise to hear that the game has broken a sales record.
According to Superdata, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 5 million digital units within a single month (this was based on its March sales), which was more than any other console game including previous record-holder Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Superdata said that those New Horizons‘ sales figures were roughly equivalent to the combined first-month digital sales for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon Sword and Shield.
The data also noted other March winners. Half-Life: Alyx, while not a big hit by normal triple-A game standards, was a “blockbuster” among its virtual reality peers, with 860 thousand gamers playing it in that month. Doom Eternal sold 3 million digital units, over thrice the amount than Doom 2016 did at launch. Meanwhile, the launch of Call of Duty Warzone caused the number of monthly active users for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to increase “159% month-over-month to reach an all-time high of 62.7M”.
Gaming revenues also saw an increase as a result of COVID-19-induced lockdowns. Digital game spending hit $10 billion in March, while mobile game revenue hit $5.7 billion. “Premium console revenue” hit $1.5 billion after rising by “64% from February to March”, and “premium PC revenue rose 56%” during that time to hit $567 million.
