According to a recent Nintendo financial data report (results as of 31st March of this year), Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 11.77 million units in the span of 11 days. The game’s sales numbers for the first six weeks is a staggering 13.41 million units. This sequel outperformed previous Animal Crossing titles like the Nintendo DS Animal Crossing: Wild World and the 3DS Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Other noteworthy stats are as follows:

• Pokémon Sword/Shield, regarded as one of the more divisive mothership Pokémon titles in the series, basically beat out every other 3DS Pokémon game’s sales with an impressive 17.37 million units. The only titles that outperformed it are Pokémon Red/Green/Blue, Pokémon Gold/Silver, and Pokémon Diamond/Pearl.
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are still going strong, with 24.77 million and 18.84 million units sold respectively.

Given how pleasant and meme-worthy Animal Crossing: New Horizon is, and the fact that it reminds people of a happier time before the pandemic, these high volume numbers for an exclusive family-friendly title are expected. The phrase “right place, right time” comes heavily into play here; I doubt New Horizon would sell this fast and this high during any other time.
