Metal Gear Solid Director Wants To Make An Animated Series With David Hayter

Metal Gear Solid movie director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has revealed that not only is he interested in making a Metal Gear Solid animated series, but he also wants to bring original Metal Gear Solid franchise protagonist Snake voice actor David Hayter.

Speaking with Gary Whitta on his Animal Talking show (via GamesRadar), Vogt-Roberts said:

“… trying to get an animated series going that brings back David Hayter, that brings back the original voice cast, and doing that in tandem [with the MGS movie].”

David Hayter is the definitive voice of Snake, and he was last seen voicing the character in 2018’s Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, he was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland in 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Metal Gear Solid V

The Metal Gear Solid movie has been stuck in development hell for the past decade or so, as Vogt-Roberts said on the matter:

“I’ve been on that movie for six years and I’ve been fighting every single day to make sure that we translate that movie properly.

This is my baby.

I’ve been working on this thing for six years, trying to make it so it is the disruptive, punk-rock, true to Metal Gear, true to Kojima-san spirit version of what this is and I will continue to fight for it every day.

It’s a difficult thing.

Getting any movie made in Hollywood is hard.

Getting something like Metal Gear made where it is so complex is even harder.

That’s why I’m trying to make it for a budget where you can do crazy shit, where you can do the Metal Gear version of it, where it isn’t neutered.”

The director is best known for directing 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and he added that Kojima himself once gave him advice on how to approach the Metal Gear Solid movie:

“Betray your audience.”

Yes, that’s what Kojima told him, and it’s clear that Vogt-Roberts is a huge fan of the franchise, from the sound of it. Despite that, if studio interference and less-than-ideal circumstances continue, it remains unclear when, or even if, we’ll ever see the Metal Gear Solid movie and animated series come to life.
