Bethesda Is Only The Beginning, Says Microsoft CEO

Microsoft caused ripples in the games industry two days ago when they announced to the world that they have made acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, id Software, Arkane, and more.

The company splurged over a whopping US$7.5 billion, giving them now ownership over iconic game franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and more.

Despite now owning Bethesda and 22 other studios (including Double Fine Productions, Mojang, Obsidian, and more), Microsoft has confirmed their intent to continue purchasing more studios and developers in the future.

Speaking with Cnet, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said:

“You can’t wake up one day and say.

Let me build a game studio.

The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities.”

Xbox boss Phil Spencer reaffirmed that idea in the same interview, saying:

“Content is just the incredible ingredient to our platform that we continue to invest in.

This doubles the size of our creative organization.”

With the acquisition of Bethesda and the prospect of seeing all those games on Xbox Game Pass, not to mention that future titles will be PC and Xbox exclusives, Microsoft is on a warpath during this console war. What previously looked like another easy win for Sony and PlayStation now seems like anything but.
