Just when you thought esports was going to stay stagnant with MOBAs and, well, more MOBAs, along comes this gamechanger. Blizzard’s first-ever shooter introduces the co-op hero shooter genre which has traces of Team Fortress 2’s DNA, but is generally its own beast. The modes were plentiful. The 20+ roster was full of great playstyles that cater to both casual shooter fans/Call of Duty players (Mercy, Reinhardt, Soldier 76) and hardcore twitch shooters/Quake & Unreal veterans (Zenyatta, McCree, Sombra).
The casual and competitive systems were (mostly) fun and tweaked on a monthly basis to placate shooter fans. And its impact was so ginormous, other companies wanted to make their own hero-filled shooter with most of them failing hard. You won’t see Rainbow Six: Siege, Apex Legends, and Valorant doing what they’re doing now if it wasn’t for the existence of Blizzard’s magnum opus shooter.
