Marvel Has Found Its Kamala Khan

Disney has cast actress Iman Vellani to take the role of Kamala Khan AKA the Magnificient Ms. Marvel in the upcoming Disney Plus TV series Ms. Marvel.

According to DeadlineMs. Marvel will be Vellani’s first major role in a movie or TV series, though she was previously part of a group of students chosen to curate the Toronto Film Festival’s Next Wave festival in 2019.

Vellani will also be the first Muslim superhero to lead her own Marvel movie or TV series as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kamala Khan debuted in 2013; created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, as well as writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona. She received her polymorphic abilities when her Inhuman genes activated, allowing her to stretch and distort her body (or embiggen, as said in the comics).

She’s interesting not only because of her powers, but the also because she’s a normal American-Pakistani Muslim kid from New Jersey struggling to find her own identity between the pressures of school, family, culture, and religion.

Ms. Marvel doesn’t have release date yet, but we already know that Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) will be directing episodes while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon (Farah Goes Bang) will act as showrunners and directors as well. Screenwriter and comedian Bisha K. Ali is the head writer.

Ms. Marvel also recently starred in Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers. Unfortunately, the game squanders its potential and just isn’t very good (check out our full review here).
