Xbox Isn’t Obligated To Release Bethesda Games On PlayStation & Switch, Says Phil Spencer

After the major Bethesda US$7.5 billion buyout via Microsoft Xbox, gamers are wondering if Bethesda-published titles like the Fallout, Dishonored, and Doom series will have a future outside of PC and Xbox consoles.

Not releasing those RPGs and open-world games on the PlayStation means that the Xbox is looking pretty sexy if you’re into those games and want console versions of it. According to a Kotaku interview, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that he could make future Bethesda games console-exclusives. To add into that, he said that they can recoup the US$7.5 billion cost it spent on Bethesda without selling its future titles like Elder Scrolls 6 on PlayStation consoles.

“I don’t want to be flip about that. This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was, ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games.

But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”

True, Phil Spencer and Xbox are honouring past agreements of certain Bethesda games being exclusive on PS5 like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, but future title exclusivity and multiplatform will be a case-by-case basis. Either way, Xbox is reaping the rewards for either method.
