Starfield’s Map Will Be Huge, Says Todd Howard

Bethesda’s Todd Howard revealed a lot of Starfield info during this year’s Develop: Brighton conference. That’s going to be Bethesda’s biggest and most-anticipated sci-fi RPG.

Todd Howard talked about the expected size of the map, which will be even larger than that of Fallout 76; for comparison, that map is four times the size of Skyrim. He wasn’t specific on whether it’s a galaxy map or a map of one big planet.

The game’s landmass and levels will be procedurally generated. Distinct landmarks will still be hand-crafted, but the landmass and other non-featured bits will be generated at random. In Starfield and their other open-world RPG The Elder Scrolls VI, cities should become more lively both by being larger in size and feature more NPCs who hopefully will be more fun to interact with.

In addition, Bethesda’s Creation engine will be overhauled, promising a “larger jump [in quality] than that from Morrowind to Oblivion”. The engine’s rendering, animation, and AI will get the most improvements.

Before you get excited, just remember that this is the same Todd Howard who went a bit overboard with Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76’s info during press conferences, keynotes, and public presentations. Also, keep in mind that there’s a good chance that Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI may be Xbox exclusive, given the company’s recent buyout by Microsoft. We know that they’ll be available on Game Pass at launch, there’s that.
