Here’s the rest of 2020’s best games so far.

#21: Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time (PS4, Xbox One)

Talk about a meta subtitle. It’s really high time the bandicoot and his pals get another crack at 3D platforming. And developer Toys for Bob hit it out of the ballpark with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.

The game’s controls are tight, the level design from the get-go is fun and challenging in all the right places, the story is a nice mix of the old and new, and the new powerup mechanics are refreshing additions. The four different masks on their own have their unique gimmicks like gravity-reversing, time slowdown, superspins that take you to the moon and beyond, and platforming-phasing.

But when combined together? That’s when the going gets tough and creative. The level flow and rhythm are easy to get the hang of, yet hard to master once you aim to get a good amount of gems to unlock that one weird-ass fetish you want for either Crash and Coco Bandicoot. The additional characters like Dingodile, Neo Cortex, and thicc Tawna Bandicoot also have unique levels with new mechanics to play around with like a grappling hook, a vacuum shotgun that sucks crates, and a raygun that transforms foes into different kinds of platforms. Genius, really.

Speaking of gems, the game is a bitch to get full achievements and trophies for. I’m not referring to the last level Cortex Castle; completing that level is doable. Just replaying the inverse levels and having to gain all trophies at one shot without dying more than 3 times, when that concept actually helps you find secrets easier, is already a Herculean task.

But that’s just for outliers with nothing better to do. You’ll still get your money’s worth with the true Crash experience, tailored for 2020’s sensibilities.
