Russia Is Banning Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, & A Bunch Of Other “Violent” Animes

Better late than never? At least, that’s according to the moral police in Russia.

A district court in the country has banned the anime likes of Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, and Inuyashiki on certain streaming websites. The reason? This is due to the worry that Russian teens will recreate violent acts from them. The St. Petersburg court system alleged that “every episode contains cruelty, murder, violence” (via Moscow Times).

As a result, 49 streaming websites in the country has received five lawsuits back in December. The same prosecutors in court also ask that shows like Naruto, Elfen Lied, and Interspecies Reviewers be banned as well. So far, the bans are dished out on a case-by-case basis.

Parents in Russia have been calling for a ban on Death Note since 2013 due to a teen suicide who just so happens to have a collection of the manga.
