Sony Is Being Sued For Limiting Game Purchases To PlayStation Store
By Alleef Ashaari|May 6, 2021|0 Comment
Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC ie being sued in a lawsuit where consumers are claiming that the company is operating an unlawful monopoly by restricting purchases of PlayStation games to its inhouse store.
It’s worth pointing out that this remains a proposed class-action suit, so it might not even go anywhere in terms of being a legal case.
According to Bloomberg, many gamers said that Sony stopped allowing third-party retailers (including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and others) to sell download codes for PlayStation games over two years ago. Since then, Sony’s PlayStation Store has been the only source for digital games on PlayStation consoles.
The consumers said:
“Sony’s monopoly allows it to charge supra-competitive prices for digital PlayStation games, which are significantly higher than their physical counterparts sold in a competitive retail market, and significantly higher than they would be in a competitive retail market for digital games.”
What this means is that people are allegedly paying as much as 175 percent more for downloadable games than the same ones on physical, which forms the main argument and backbone of the lawsuit. At the time of writing, Sony has yet to give an official statement.
The case is Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, 3:21-cv-03361, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).
