Magic: Legends Is Shutting Down After 3 Months

Magic: Legends, an action RPG take on the legendary collectible card game Magic; The Gathering, is shutting down after a few months of being in open beta.

The PC game came out in its current state on 23rd March; it will shut down on 31st October. Players will get full refunds ahead of the shutdown; the game will be inaccessible after that date. Here’s an official statement:

“Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved.

Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established ARPG genre. We learned several valuable lessons along the way, and we will use them to improve Cryptic’s future development efforts.”

We played Magic: Legends for a day or two. We couldn’t jive with the game because it was laggy and bug-riddled, its gameplay was lacking, and it just didn’t feel rewarding to play as. The game’s monetisation was pretty aggressive even for a F2P game.

With a bit more time and actual thought, as well as a better monetisation plan, the game could have gone places. Alas, that isn’t to be.
