Sony Predicts Selling Less PS5 Consoles Due To Ongoing Chip Shortage

Even after one whole year since the PS5’s initial launch, the PS5 is still extremely difficult to find and buy. Most places are still out of stock and even when they get new ones, these PS5s get snapped up in a heartbeat. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s more likely to get even harder to get your hands on a PS5.

According to Bloomberg, Sony has reduced its PS5 production outlook for this fiscal year due to component and logistics constraints. They had previously targeted more than 16 million units assembled in the year ending on March 2022, but the company has now reduced that number down to about 15 million, which is about one million less than expected.

This is because logistics issues and parts shortages have grown worse, according to Sony Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki who told investors on a conference call late last month. Despite the PS5 becoming the fastest Sony console to reach 10 million units sold in July 2021, it has already fallen behind the sales pace of the PS4 since then due to lack of supply.

The chips in shot supply include unremarkable but essential gear like power management chips. Chipmakers like Toshiba and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing have warned that the problem will continue into 2022. Many are frustrated by the lack of PS5 supply, including game developers and publishers.

An unnamed executive told Bloomberg that players who used to buy PlayStation versions of their games are now gradually shifting to the PC version instead. PS5 games have also failed to make much of an impact on Japanese sales charts, which are dominated by Nintendo Switch games.

According to the same report, the PS5 will remain in tight supply through 2022 and it will be challenging for the company to produce enough units in order to achieve Sony’s target of 22.6 million sales in the next fiscal year.
