Here’s Why Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker Has Long Queues Since Early Access

The last weekend was a joyous celebration for Final Fantasy XIV as the latest expansion of the game, Endwalker, has dropped. For those who got in during Early Access, good for you.

For the rest who had to wait for a very, very long time? Not so much. You’ll be seeing the bottom screen a lot, and when you’re in, the AFK period for auto server logoffs are so strict you will need to binge the game from start to finish.

Part of the reason why the queues have been so long is the global chip shortage that has prevented Square Enix from getting more servers to cater to the high demand. Here’s the official statement on the FFXIV official blog from the game’s producer and director Naoki Yoshida.

“When it comes to adding new Worlds, we need tens of ‘server machines’ for every World that we add. Server machines are high-performance computers, which utilize numerous semiconductors. However, due to the COVID-19 countermeasures currently in place, many factories across the globe which produce semiconductors, have halted production or have faced labour shortages.

We have made considerable investment — even more so than usual — to secure the required hardware, but even so, a long lead time will be needed to prepare the server hardware.”

Long story short, it’ll take several months for FFXIV to add new Worlds and servers. On a related note, the global chip shortage has also affected other companies like Apple, Tesla, and Playdate.
